Dear California Assembly Members and Governor Schwarzenegger,

The Klamath River's salmon populations are hovering at critically low levels and extinction is a real threat. Native Americans, commercial fishermen, dozens of river communities and the Klamath's economy depend upon healthy salmon runs in order to survive.

Despite this fisheries emergency, the California Department of Fish & Game continues to issue permits that allow recreational suction dredge miners to harm the Klamath's fisheries while searching for gold. It is time for California to regulate and restrict this motorized, in-stream mining practice as have many other states and countries.

I urge you to support SB 670 and institute a moratorium on suction dredge mining until a thorough scientific review has been completed and new regulations are enacted. SB 670 was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate on a 31-8 vote.

The Klamath's fishery cannot sustain the impact of loosely regulated and unenforced suction dredging. We need your leadership to ensure the survival of the Klamath salmon.

Vini, I have a better one for you, one of Walt Duffy's students up there at Humbolt did a study on the Trinity and he estimates that 9 percent of native run fry are being eaten by DFG Hatchery Steelhead. His count and estimate did not include any other predatory species, however; Hatchery Chinook where observed during the study ingesting native run fry. There might be some light at the end of the tunnel. Last night, when I was watching the news, they were talking about the failure to reach a budget. They said (the news drones did, not the governor) that all bills not related to the budget will not be passed. I am looking for any comments by the governor pertaining to this.
I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on a bill (if there is one), but if this story is true, it could kill the bill.

I'm heading out today with my nephew to teach him how to prospect, but I will try and look into it tonight. If anyone else hears anything, let us know.

So, I'm not sure if it will have any impact on the bill.

put the brakes on caltrans and there unnecessary road work. i see them every single day doing stupid shit that doesnt need done, let alone them sending out ( and paying) 20 people to take all day do a job that can be done by 2-3 people in 1/2 hour or so. ive seen them do stupid shit like have one scraper scrape dirt ut of a ditch onto the roadway, and 100 feet behind it, have an identical scraper going thru and push the dirt that was just scraped out of the ditch right back into the ditch. now, what purpose does that serve?

ive lived up here above burney now for almost 4 years. in that time, have yet one single time to be able to drive between burney and redding and not be hung up at road work for anywere between 10 and 30 minutes . i even had a caltrans employee tell me one time right on 299 here ( and i wrote the govenors office, which in turn contacted caltrans) that they do alot of un-needed work on 299 because its off the beaten path and if they dont spend their budget money up, they wont get the same or more the following year ( sound famliar?)


i think if they were to put all non-urgent roadwork in california on hold for 1 year, they would be able to fix the budget and be in the black n no time.

Hoser, from what I saw on the news up here anything they send to Arnie for the next few weeks is going right back probably with a big rubber stamp VETO on it. He did warn them to get with the budget, and what I saw he was not happy with them that it wasn't done before now. Hopefully the damn thing will go back if it gets to Arnie and get lost in committee again, or it will die so they can get some other piece of crap legislation through that screws even more people.
I know one thing is for sure it may be working already, we saw very few dredges on the Feather this last weekend.

I put in a call last week to the folks that own the claim above me outta Quincy to let them know that someone had filed over the top of them. And wouldn't you know this topic came up when they called me back today/yesterday? Seems they know of a few people that are not dredging this year because it's up in the air. They also let me know the 2 claims above them are for sale. Also turns out they knew one of my uncles before he passed, and a couple of my cousins. Ironicly when I left them the message Friday they were right up the road here in Fallon. Small world.
